Gardiner Houlgate to sell guitars owned by Bob Dylan, Rory Gallagher at auction
The auction kicks off next week
1960 Fender Custom Esquire
Auction house Gardiner Houlgate’s December Guitar Auction is approaching, and among the lots going under the hammer are some guitars owned by Bob Dylan, Rory Gallagher and more.
The Bob Dylan-owned guitar is a 1962 Fender Stratocaster that has been refinished in an eye-catching gold sparkle. This was done at Fender’s own factory in 1991 by Master Builder J. Black, at Dylan’s request. After this, the guitar was gifted to Dylan’s guitar tech at the time Cesar Diaz. It comes with the original brown tolex case and a signed letter from Diaz certifying its authenticity.
The guitar’s starting bid is £35,000, and it’s expected to reach anything up to £80,000.
Rory Gallagher’s Gibson L6S is also up for sale. This unique Gibson, the first to come with 24 frets, comes in a natural finish, and has been modified for a more traditional pickup selector. The original L6S guitars had a rotary knob selector, but this model has been reverted to a traditional three-way toggle to choose between the two humbuckers.
The guitar comes with a letter of authenticity from Rory’s nephew Daniel Gallagher and starts at £7,500.
Further artist owned guitars heading up the auction include Richie Sambora’s PRS Private Stock Double neck, an Andy Beech made Prince Cloud guitar, a Jackson bass owned by Megadeth’s David Ellefson and two acoustic guitars previously owned by UK Folk legend John Renbourn.
The auction begins Wednesday 9 December 10 AM GMT. The sale will also be available for public viewing by appointment over Monday 7 December and Tuesday 8 December. Find out more with the catalogue over at gardinerhoulgate.co.uk.
