A rare studio outtake featuring Rory Gallagher and Jerry Lee Lewis jamming the Rolling Stones’ (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction has been unearthed. The track will be included in the double-CD and digital editions of the upcoming compilation, The Best Of Rory Gallagher, due out 9 October.
The Stones cover came out of the star-studded sessions for Lewis’ 1973 The Session…Recorded in London with Great Artists and features Gallagher on vocals and lead guitar. On the track, Lewis contributed vocals and a piano solo. Take a listen below.
Donal Gallagher, Rory’s brother and long-time manager recalled the session in an email to Rolling Stone. He revealed that the suggestion to try a take of the classic Stones tune came from The Session producer Steve Rowland, who didn’t realise that Lewis didn’t know the song.
“A bit bamboozled at the lyrics and a bit embarrassed at not really knowing of the song, Jerry’s paranoia kicked in and thought he was being ‘wound-up,’ ” Donal said. “Annoyance flashed on the Killer’s face, as his wild eyes scanned the studio, fixing on Rory. ‘I trust you boy. Without looking at anyone else but me, tell me truthfully, is there a song called Satisfaction? If so, you start teaching me.’ ”
The Best Of Rory Gallagher, which will release under UMe, collects tracks from all throughout Gallagher’s career, spanning his early work with the band Taste to 1990’s Fresh Evidence, the Irish blues great’s final solo record.
Physical editions of the release include both single/double CD and double-LP formats. Alongside this, a limited edition 7-inch single of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction will be available as an exclusive to the online stores of uDiscover Music and The Sound of Vinyl.
